Funding from The National Lottery: Awards for All!
Work in Progress Rhyl CIC is over the moon to announce that we’ve been awarded an Awards for All Grant from The National Lottery Community Fund!! This is such fantastic news and will help us carry Work in Progress into the future — we have so many exciting plans for 2025 and this grant will help us make them happen for our members.

Diolch! Thank you to The National Lottery Community Fund for recognising the importance of inclusion, mental health, and the power of the performing arts!

We are all a Work in Progress. Together we can do so much!
2024 Sharing: We are Work in Progress!
W E D I D I T A G A I N !
WOW! We didn't think we'd ever be able to top our amazing first public Sharing, but this year...

WE DID!

This year our Sharing was full of everything under the sun:

-
Music -- including solos, harmony singing, guitar and ukulele, an original song, and even an a capella performance by the Team
-
Devised drama pieces
-
Dance and movement
-
Sign language
-
Original poems
-
Spoken word
-
and even some raving with the audience, complete with glo-sticks!

We also featured a multimedia element by incorporating some screen work, all thanks to our Technical Director Andy Virgo and our friends at Wicked Wales Studios.

We were overjoyed to be able to perform with this year's Visiting Guest Artists:
Miranda Colby Browne sang 'Oh Ms Believer' with our Team. The a capella arrangement was a commissioned piece and was used to accompany a piece of devised drama by our company members.

Award-winning dancer and choreographer Little Peaches led us in a powerful dance involving a huge piece of fabric that we danced behind, through, and in front of.

Ballroom dancers Dave & Loretta Littler helped us bring an important story to life by pretending to lead a Rumba class onstage. It was all part of a sequence about acceptance, self-worth, and what real beauty is.

Actor Ellen Buckley came to us through our partnership with The University of Chester. She helped our members devise some funny drama scenes and even joined us onstage in one scene. She was also very busy all night as she helped us out a lot backstage.
Award-winning author Daniel Whelan helped members create their own 'monstrous' characters in his workshop. These characters were used as inspiration in the scenes with Ellen. Although Daniel didn't perform with us, he was in the audience and was brought into a scene briefly with a little sneaky audience participation!
We performed 'Fix You / Sit Down' one final time, thanks to our friends Choirs For Good who let us use their track. We performed this together with Choirs For Good last in last year's Sharing as well as in The Kaleidoscope Project at the Llangollen International Musical Eisteddfod.

Our raffle was so successful this year, with some really cracking prizes sourced by our PR Fairy Denise! We also included a homemade gift from different Work in Progress members with each prise, too -- which were extremely popular!
Yet again we all received trophies afterwards -- and so did all of our Visiting Guest Artists, Andy, Lesley Collins (our incredible Deputy Stage Manager / Miracle Worker) and Dr Pamela Barnes and Dr Ruth Dockwray, our friends and researchers from The University of Chester. Even Possum (Little Peaches' assistance dog) received a personalised dogbiscuit!

Sue & Kay, two of our members who weren't able to be with us at the Sharing, were presented with their trophies the following week at our party (and of course Kay's assistance dog Louis received HIS personalised dog biscuit!). Everyone was also given their own framed headshots, and we shared stories and memories from our fantastic Sharing!

And then... We started working on our NEXT one! We love what we do and we are NOT going to stop!

Thank you to everyone who came to support us, who filled out feedback forms, donated to Work in Progress, and of course to our wonderful sponsors. We couldn't do it without you. THANK YOU for helping us make the arts accessible to ALL.

Extra special thanks to our UNBELIEVABLY INCFREDIBLE team of Volunteers: Adele, Caroline, Jack, and Graham. They do so much more than people realise to help our members in so many different ways. Graham is moving on to participate in another group on Wednesday nights now, so we said goodbye to him with gratitude and thanks. He's been with us from our Pilot Project in 2022 up to now and helped us find our feet and grow as a group. We hate to see him go but we're happy he'll be pursuing another interest. He has promised to come visit and we'll hold him to that!

We'll be sharing some photos in our Gallery) as soon as we can. Until then, here are the pages from our programme. We can't wait to do this again in 2025!!!

The Kaleidoscope Project:
Llangollen International Musical Eisteddfod
This summer we were invited to participate in the The Kaleidoscope Project (formerly The Inclusion Project) at the Llangollen International Musial Eisteddfod! The three groups who performed last summer were invited back again this year to relaunch the event under its new name -- and in its new time slot: opening the prestigious Choir of the World competition!

It was an amazing experience, and we received so much great feedback from our performance. It was so nice to perform with Choirs For Good and Signing Sensations again as well!
Crossing Borders 3: Modes of Capture
We are thrilled to have been invited to participate in a research project through the University of Chester, all about mental health and the performing arts. The researchers are Dr Pamela Barnes and Dr Ruth Dockwray, and they are amazing! At the end of this project there will be a published paper all about what we as Work in Progress do and the positive impact it has on our participants.

As part of our exciting collaboration with the University of Chester, members of Work in Progress performed at 'Crossing Borders 3: Modes of Capture' at Storyhouse Theatre, Chester. There were speakers and guests from everywhere from the UK to Portugal, and the entire event was incredibly inspiring!

Our performance was received with cheers and a standing ovation!
A local artist created real-time creative impressions of the event the entire day which was also so fascinating. You can see how she interpreted our performance by checking our our gallery here.

EVEN MORE EXCITING NEWS!

Rhyl Mayor Elect Councillor Ms Cheryl Williams has selected Work in Progress Rhyl CIC as one of her chosen charities of the Mayoral Year. What an honour!

Our two Co-Founders, Toby Fagan (Chair) and Leslie Churchill Ward (Artistic Director) have been invited to attend the Mayor’s Civic Service next month. Watch this space for a photo!

We are so grateful to Rhyl Mayor Elect Councillor Ms Cheryl Williams, along with her consort Mrs Ann Jones, for supporting Work in Progress! It means so much that they recognise the importance of promoting and celebrating inclusion, positive mental health, and friendship through the medium of the performing arts.

Murder Mystery Fundraiser
The Murder Mystery Experience put on a fundraiser for us and it was a blast!
What a fun night! Members of Work in Progress performed at the start of the evening, and then, along with the rest of the guests, we all got to figure out ‘whodunnit’ as actors performed a murder mystery for us. The plot was based on set of an action movie, and some of our very own members even got in on the action! After solving the crime, Work in Progress was asked to give an encore performance!
Check out our Gallery for some photos.

Many thanks to all who donated their time and talent at this event — and to all who attended.

Thank You to the Gwynt y Môr Community Fund!
Thanks to generous funding from the Gwynt y Môr Community Fund we all have tote bags or back packs! Their logo and ours are featured side by side — a true indication of our friendship and collaboration.
Everyone received their bags last night and we took some very happy photos — we’ve also included one of our ‘outtakes’ because being silly is something we’re pretty good at… so why not share a giggle with you all too!

Work in Progress Rhyl CIC
We're a CIC!
Work in Progress is now officially registered as a CIC -- a Community Interest Company. Our CIC number is 15526331. From the 1st of April we will officially be known as...
Work in Progress Rhyl CIC!
Don't worry -- although our legal name has slightly changed, we will still be operating as simply Work in Progress. So no changes to our beautiful logo or anything.

Being a CIC is very exciting and has many benefits for us as a group. It will bring more opportunities and open more doors when it comes to funding. Finding funding is important to us as it means we can keep our sessions free of charge for our members, making the performing arts accessible for all regardless of income or employment status.
Funding from the Community Cohesion Fund!
We have even more great news...
We've received £1,000 from the Community Cohesion Fund!
This funding will help Work in Progress continue to do the work we are so passionate about. Active participation in the arts helps people become healthier physically, mentally, and emotionally. It also helps people discover (or rediscover) their confidence as they try new things and feel more comfortable expressing themselves. We can't wait to collaborate with the North East Community Cohesion Team.
Our theme this year is 'Community', so who better to talk with than people who really know all about what makes communities happy, safe, healthy, inclusive, and accessible.
Thank you -- Diolch to the Community Cohesion Fund!

Generous Donation from the 'Beat the Blues Brunch'!
We had some unexpected visitors at last week's session!
Representatives from Deeside Round Table, Alyn & Deeside XRT 41 Club -Past Round Tablers Club, and Deeside Ladies Circle came by to say hello! We performed a little for them, shared some of what we're currently working on, and then invited them to sing with us. We had cuppas and cakes, and then... they presented us with a massive cheque for £1,000! WOW!
They also invited us to perform in another event they will be hosting this summer.
Watch this space for further details about that exciting news!
DIOLCH!
THANK YOU!

'Beat the Blues Brunch' Fundraiser!
Sunday 14th January, Hawarden Masonic Hall
There are some people in the world who simply are GOOD PEOPLE -- and we met some of them yesterday!
Three incredible organisations held a fundraiser in part for Work in Progress, even though they'd never met us or seen us perform! They simply wanted to support us, and what we do... and boy did they ever!
Led by organiser Rory Tompsett, Deeside Round Table, Alyn & Deeside XRT 41 Club -Past Round Tablers Club, and Deeside Ladies Circle put on a special fundraiser to support mental health awareness on what is for many, the most difficult time of year.

'Beat the Blues Brunch' -- 14th January 2024

Rory had what he calls "a crazy idea": to serve a quality brunch to members of the community, provide live entertainment, promote mental health awareness... all while raising much-needed funds for two groups -- including Work in Progress!

The brunch was prepared by award-winning chefs Danny Burke and Col Devitt with top quality ingredients supplied by sponsor David Joinson Quality Meats. Ian Gibbons (Radio Deeside) was the event's emcee.

There was a raffle with some impressive prizes (we were all envious of the winner of a year's membership to Theatr Clwyd!) and live entertainment from Helen Shanley Music (what a voice!) as well as Work in Progress! Both brunch sittings had such a positive atmosphere and we receivedincredible feedback from guests. At the end of a very happy event, Helen invited members of Work in Progress to join her in an impromptu rendition of 'Proud Mary' which was a total blast! Guests, volunteers, EVERYONE joined in. What a way to finish!

& Lead Organiser Rory Tompsett
Members of Work in Progress performed numbers that were both thought-provoking and joyous
We are so thankful and humbled that these three groups put so much effort and care into raising funds for us!
